Sherri Denault

“The outer parts of Sherri’s work fold in to reveal the meaning of its inner parts.”

Nature is a constant presence in my work, offering a language for growth, erosion, and renewal. I am drawn to the ways materials hold memory and reveal the passage of time. Paper buckles and softens, fibers fray and tighten, and surfaces shift through layering and connection. Rather than concealing these changes, I allow them to remain visible as part of the work.

My practice moves between painting, fiber, and sculpture. I work with watercolor, India ink, encaustic, translucent and specialty papers, jute, waxed linen, wool, cordage, seagrass, wood, stone, and found materials. I am drawn to the contrast between these materials and what happens when something fragile is placed against something strong, or something natural is brought into a constructed form. Materials are not simply added to the work; they become part of its meaning.

Throughout the work is a tension between fragility and stability. Forms loosen but do not fully collapse; connections stretch and hold. Disruption and repair exist side by side, reflecting an ongoing state of becoming in which change is not something to resolve, but something to carry forward.
